The Institute focuses the research guidance to enhance the development in nano technology based methods for crime laboratories used to examine evidences on :
- Faster, more reliable widely applicable, more rugged, less costly or less labor intensive tools for identification, collection, preservation or analysis of crime sense evidence (development of miniature or portable forensic testing devices).
- Tools that can increase the discriminatory power of forensic analyses or provide quantitative or statistical data that can increase the power of a match.
- Identification or characteristics of new analyses of forensic importance.

Prof. Y K Agrawal, M. Sc. Ph. D., D.Sc.(USA) in Pharmaceutical Science, D.Sc.(India), F.R.S.C.(UK), C. Chem.(UK), F.I.C., F.S.(Switz), F.A.Sc.(USA), F.G.S.A., is working as a Director, Institute of Research & Development, Forensic Sciences University ,Ganhinagar. Formally, he has worked as the Director, Nirma University of Science & Technology, Director, School of Sciences, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad and Professor and Head, Pharmacy Department, Faculty of Technology Engineering, M. S. University of Baroda.
Prior to this he has served at the various prestigious institutions of the country like NCL, Pune, IIT, Bombay, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Trombay, IISc, Bangalore etc. in various capacities. Prof. Agrawal has visited and experienced at the various International Universities of USA, UK, Australia, Spain, Israel and Germany. He is the fellow and member of the several Chemical Societies of the country and also abroad.
Prof. Y K Agrawal has more than 45 years of teaching and research experience and published 450 research papers in International Journals of repute, 5 patents, guided 110 Ph. D. students in (Pharmacy, Chemistry, Engineering and Bio-sciences) and also 30 M. Pharm., 5 M. Phil and 5 ME students. He is a Recipient of “Russian Science Academy Award 1985”, Hari Om Ashram Award 1989, Hari Om Ashram Award 1991, Royal Society of Chemistry, London Research Award in 1997, 1998 (on Supramolecules), H. K. Sen Memorial Award in Pharmaceutical Science, 1998, Dr. A. K. Ganguli Oration Award 2000 in Environmental Science, P. K. Bose memorial Award 2001, IDMA Eminent Pharmaceutical Analyst Award 2003, CSIR Bronze Medal for research contribution in Chemistry 2004, Dr. V.T. Athwale Award 2005 and IIT New Delhi SPARCS Award for outstanding work in Application on Research in Chemical Systems 2006. He is a member of International Advisory Board of Fullerene Nanotubes and Carbon Nanostructure (USA) and also Author of Fullerene Derivatives and their Analytical Applications published by Kluwer (USA). He is a Member of Editorial Board mainly Inorganic Chemistry (Bentham),Mini Res.Rev.(Bentham), Indian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Indian Drugs, Indian Journal of Chemistry, Chemical Research etc. He is a Member of the Atomic Energy, UGC, DST, CSIR, DSIR etc. and Indian Representative of Asian Analytical Society, Japan.
