Day by day, laws and enforcement agencies find it necessary to regulate those activities that influence our daily lives with the assistance of science, for example, the laws and agencies that regulate the quality of our food, drinks, drugs, extent of environmental pollution and use of pesticides. Hence, it would be difficult to regulate the related regulations and acts that could be effectively monitored and enforced without the assistance of scientific technology and the skill of scientific community. Laws are continually being broadened and revised to counter the increasing crime rates. At the same time they are looking more and more to the scientists for advice and technical support of their efforts. Enforcement agencies as well as forensic laboratories have expended their investigative functions and methods.

Institute of Forensic Science

Forensic science plays an important role in criminal justice delivery system. Besides, a routine work in the laboratory, there is another important dimension to the role that a forensic scientist plays that is participating in the criminal investigation process. A forensic scientist’s ability reflects on the crime scene where he is required to give accurate and objective information regarding the sequence of events that have occurred at crime scene. He is not only required to collect and preserve the physical evidence, but also contributes a highly professional and unique perspective to develop the crime scene reconstruction by the observation and evaluation of physical evidence. Reconstruction means right connection to be made to indicate the relationship between crime scene, criminal and the victim. Hence, a forensic crime scene expert is expected to have vast knowledge about different crimes, interpretation, collection, suitably preservation, documentation of physical evidence and its background.

In View of the above, the different states and central Government have developed forensic science laboratories but with wide variations in total services offered by these laboratories. Only a few forensic laboratories in India are providing full services. A “Full Service” providing Forensic Science laboratory should constitute the forensic units like Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Ballistics, DNA, Photography, Toxicology, Latent Finger print, Polygraph, Narco analysis, Brain mapping, Voice analysis, Document Examination, Wild life forensics, Cyber forensics, Forensic Engineering and Mobile Forensic Laboratory.

Presently, there is an acute shortage of forensic experts and professionals. Hence, to cater to this global shortage of these experts and foresightedness regarding threats of biological, chemical and other weapons of mass destruction, high tech crimes and terrorism which have transformed the role of modern-day forensic science, Government of Gujarat has constituted a specialized University of its own kind named ‘Gujarat Forensic Sciences University’, which will impart education and will carry out research and developmental work in various fields of forensic science.

Forensic science as such is not a discipline or branch of basic science, but is the application of the principles of basic sciences and technology. Of course, it has developed some of its own fields of like: Serology, Forensic DNA analysis, Forensic Ballistics, Forensic Toxicology etc. This makes it a multi-disciplinary enterprise and a challenging field in the justice delivery system and investigative process.

The carrier prospects of forensic scientists coming out from such dedicated institution run by highly qualified and highly experienced and renowned scientists in the field of forensic science will comparatively high and bright. The opportunities exist in government organization, law enforcement agencies, public and private sectors as investigators and vigilance officers, organizations engaged in analytical work and can set up their own profession.

Initially the course of M. Sc. Forensic Science will be started in Directorate of Forensic Science, Gujarat State, Gandhinagar. Which is a State-of-Art Forensic Science Laboratory having highly sophisticated and NABL accredited laboratories, Infrastructure and enriched library with internet facilities.
